Suggest one psychological research question that could be answered by each of the following types of statistical tests:

  • z test
  • t test for independent samples, and
  • t test for dependent samples

Charis O’Neal

Z test – A researcher randomly samples 200 12th grade students’s in Duval County, Florida to compare their SAT scores to the national mean of 976 with a standard deviation of 12.

This is a good research question to perform a Z test on since the “sample size is larger than 30 AND we know the population standard deviation” (Argosy University Lecture, 2014).

  •   T-test for independent samples – An elementary school has both traditional and Montessori classes. A researcher wants to find out which style is more effective in teaching math to 8 year olds. He performs a math assessment on 10 traditional 8 year olds and 10 Montessori 8 year olds to compare their scores.

A T-test is used with research whose “sample size is less than 30 [and whose] population standard deviation is unknown” (Argosy University Lecture, 2014).

  •   T-test for dependent samples – A researcher wants to find out how a test taker’s environment effects their score. He gives a test to a group of 25 students in a classroom with white walls, no decor and fluorescent lights. He then retests the same students while they are outside at a picnic table with natural light, moderate weather and beautiful scenery. He compares the two scores to try and find a significant difference.

A T-test is done in this case because sometimes “it is necessary to compare two sample means or sample proportions instead of comparing a sample to a population” (Argosy University Lecture, 2014).

Suggest one psychological research question that could be answered by each of the following types of statistical tests:

the z-test is fit for a question like the difference between men and women’s grades at collage in a particular class when you know the standard deviation.

the t-test for independent samples is more for the types of questions like do people feel pot has medical benefits due to the fact the sample group will have to be small in comparison to the population. that and the standard variation is unknown.

dependent T-test are for multiple samples that are related the scores of twins on SAT exams would be one.
