PowerPoint Topics

Only chose one of the topics listed below.  I am listing a large number so that most of the PowerPoint presentations will be different.  Be careful:  For example, do not write on all four points under Judaism, only pick one of them.  The same for all the religions.  Do not write on a religion, but pick a topic under the religion you are interested in.

Judaism

1. Present an outline of The Law of Moses as outlined in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.  State the different categories and give examples, with verses, of each category.  Do not only cover the 10 Commandments because that is only one part of the Law.  The Law also contained rules for food, purification, holy days, general rules for living together, etc.
2. Explain the formation of the nation of Israel in 1948 and the subsequent 1948 Arab-Israeli War (Its reason, participants, and the result).
3. Explain the Six Days War of 1967 (Its reason, participants, and result).
4. Passover (with the Seder meal), Rosh Hashanah, Hanukah, and Yom Kippur:  Explain their origin, what they mean, and how they are celebrated today.

Islam

1. Explain the creation of the nations of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Turkey. (Note:  all were founded after World War I.)
2. Describe differences in practice, beliefs, and worship between Sunnis and Shi’ites.  (Shi’ites are a majority group in Iran and Bahrain (where the US Navy’s 5^thFleet is stationed in the Persian Gulf) whereas Sunnis are a majority in most of the other Muslim Middle Eastern countries.)
3. Give a description and history (including when the first one was built and subsequent renovations) of the Dome of the Rock and the Kaba (or Kaaba or Ka’ba).
4. Describe the Hajj in detail (include reasons for each part).

Hinduism

1. Explain the story in the Mahabharata, and be sure to highlight the Bhagavad Gita, which is a small part of the Mahabharata and has been called the “Bible” of Hinduism in that it explains many Hindu ideas.
2. 4 different Hindu aspects:  tell what happens in a typical household puja (including what items are involved), describe some aspects of Hindu temples, tell the roles of priests/brahmins, and explain the significance and style of Bollywood movies (which are increasing in popularity in the USA).
3. Explain how India became a country.  This would include some information on Gandhi.
4. Explain the following gods:  Annapurna, Brahma, Vishnu (including the avatars and especially Krishna), Shiva, Ganesha, Maya, Ram, Hanuman, Saraswati, Kali, Lakshmi, and Ganga (also called Ganges as in Ganges River).
5. Describe the Vedas (of which there are four).

Buddhism

1. Give a biography of the Buddha.
2. Describe the difference between Theravada, Mahayana, and Tibetan Buddhism.

Concerning the PowerPoint presentations:  Each student will submit one Powerpoint presentation.  This is individual work and not group work.  You will be assigned your topic on the first day of class.

• Write your name on the first slide.
• The presentation will contain at least 10 slides and not more than 15 slides, with the lead slide and the bibliography slide not counting in the 10-slide count.
• The bibliography will include at least four sources; you can use the textbook but it does not count as a source.
• Do not use Wikipedia as a source for your text, although Wikipedia is a great source for pictures and maps.
• The grade will derive from presentation and content.  For this reason, do not simply list three or four lines of text or several paragraphs per slide but give information in each slide along with the text, such as charts, maps, pictures with explanation, etc; the beauty of PowerPoints is that they convey the information by using a variety of sources (charts, etc.)
• Be sure to give the source for each picture, graph, etc., that you use.
• You can use the space below the slide for the reference information or sources (websites, books, etc.).  This is preferred to placing the reference material in the slide itself.
• Note:  Do not plagiarize.  Whenever you use quote, you have to put quotation marks around the quote and tell the source of the quote after the last quotation mark.  Please be careful not to do this. You can copy and paste, but only do so sparingly and use quotation marks around any quoted material.  Remember, an academic work (paper, paragraph summary, slide) should contain no more than ¼ of quoted material.  Think of it this way, if you find a great definition and make that quote into the total information on a slide, what you have demonstrated is that you can find information and copy and paste, not that you have learned the information.  So mainly use your own words in the slides but you can quote from time-to-time.
