The Color of Debt: How Collection Suits Squeeze Black Neighborhoods”
Why is there a racial imbalance in the number of creditor lawsuits against those in debts to corporations? Even when controlled for income and for the amount of debts, ProPublica has found that black families with outstanding debts are sued at significantly higher rates than white families with these debts.

For an opportunity to earn these points, please read the following very carefully and follow all directions.
- For up to 18 points extra credit, review the article, the Marketplace Interview/Story (listen), and the MSNBC story
- Write an essay in which you discuss 1-2 specific points from each (all three), and connect the paper to material we cover in AAST 220, in a paper of 550 words or more.
- Ensure that your paper demonstrates your comprehension of the documentary, the New York Times article, and the NPR story, and that it provides a clear connection to the course text/material/topics.
- In your discussion, provide clear connections to the the text and themes from the course.
- Ensure that you provide at least one quote per required source/media item in your essay.
- Remember to follow the essay template for this course to format your paper, and include the title of all discussed materials, such as the names of the short film and of the article, in your essay
- Choose a clear title for your essay that relates to the materials being used for the essay. Ex: “Reflections on ProPublica’s ‘The Color of Debt’ Article”
