Data Table 2: Hearing Tests Test Observations Weber Test Rinne Test Balance Test Exercise 2 Hearing and Balance In this exercise, you will perform a version of the Weber and Rinne tests. These test the conduction of sound through the bony skull (sensorineural hearing) and also through the air (conductive hearing). You will also perform a balance test. Procedure 1 Perform this test in a quiet location 2 Gather the tuning fork from the kit. 3 a Perform the Weber test: Locate an area on your skull that is on the medial area on the top of your head, equidistant from each ear. b Pull the hair away from that area of the skull so you can feel the scalp. Strike the tines of the tuning fork on a hard surface such as a table and then place the handle of the tuning fork on that area of the scalp. pushing with slight pressure onto the skull. See Figure 10. Listen for the sound as it is heard in both ears. Determine if you can hear it equally loud in both ears, or if you can hear it louder in one ear than the other. C 5 d Record your observations in Data Table 2 4 Perform the Rinne test: Strike the tines of the tuning fork on a hard surface. b Place the handle on the mastoid process behind your right ear. See Figure 11, Figure 11. Placing the handle on the mostold process behind the right ear. When you can no longer hear the sound through the mastoid process, hold the tuningfork so that the tines of the tuningfork are close to the ear canal. See Figure 12 Note: A normal test for conductive hearing is that you should be able to hear the sound again when it is placed in front of the ear canal. Figure 12. Holding the tuningforktines near the ear canal Holding the tuningfork tines near the ear canal d Perform the test with the other ear. e Record your observations in Data Table 2 5 6 Ask a volunteer to help you with a balance test. Ask the volunteer to stand near a wall or chair that he or she can hold on to in case they need stability to balance. Start the stopwatch, and ask the volunteer to stand on one foot for 1 minute with his or her eyes open. Watch for small movements such as wobbling or any imbalances. Ask the volunteer to rest for 2 minutes. 7 B 9 Start the stopwatch again and ask the volunteer to stand on the same foot for 1 minute with his or her eyes closed. Watch again for small movements such as wobbling or any imbalances, 10 Record your observations in Data Table 2. Cleanup: • Return equipment to the kit for future use.
